No longer are curvy girls relegated to nothing but cropped pants in the summer. Don’t be afraid to bare those legs. For many larger women, our legs are one of our best features – filled-out, shapely, and just wanting to be seen. Just because our thighs touch doesn’t mean we can’t look great in a pair of shorts! (And don’t let anyone tell you differently.)

The real secret about wearing shorts, as with any fashion, is to simply have confidence. And for the fairer-skinned of our community, maybe a tan. A good tan (we only advocate healthy tanning methods) can help to camouflage minor imperfections you might want to de-emphasize. Aside from those two things, here are some general rules for choosing shorts that will look fabulous on you.

Short-shorts

You may have thought previously that this trend was off limits to those of us with a few extra pounds. If you’re a little apprehensive, you can wear short shorts over a pair of dark-colored tights. It will help firm up those legs, and you won’t feel so exposed. And the shortest of shorts, the ones that are really not even shorts at all, are probably not the best—even for skinny girls. Pick something that gives your legs just a little more coverage.

Mid-length Shorts

This is probably the best length if you’re trying to blend modesty with fashion. A distressed-jean short that hits just the middle of your thigh will break up the line of your legs and still show plenty of skin for summer.

Bermuda Shorts

Bermuda shorts that hit just above the knee—which will lengthen and slim the leg—provide the most coverage, in case you’re still a little self-conscious about your legs. They don’t have to be Bermuda-patterned either, nothing with little pineapples or palm trees. Knee length jeans are just as stylish this year as short-shorts, and they show off the best parts of your legs.

Proportion is the most important element when choosing shorts. You have to try them on your body. Shorter girls will look very different in the same pair of cut-offs some tall girls can wear easily. It is all about picking something that plays up your attributes, and, if you want, hides some of the things you want to hide. That’s not to say that you should hide everything. Curvy girls have spent decades resigned to less-fashionable looks. It doesn’t have to be that way anymore. Find a few pairs that you love, whether they be jean, linen, or trouser and show some skin!

If you’re not comfortable in shorts at all, the best way to get comfortable is to find a pair you really love and just wear them. Wear them until you don’t even think about it anymore. Don’t rule out shorts just because you’re not a size two—or even a size twelve! Fashion isn’t all about how other people see you, it’s about how you see yourself. And if you like what you’re wearing, if you feel good in it, that confidence will show through.
